English from the Roots Up, Volume 1 This year, 2011-2012, the kids will finish up English From The Roots Up. They began it last year, and then I switched to the RC vocabulary and we started to do Prima Latina. Well, we didn’t finish the latin and I thought why not just learn latin roots instead of the whole language. So, long story short, I am having them put the RC vocabulary aside and focus on Latin and Greek roots.

I made some notebooking pages last year for them to use, so they will continue with that. They are below and can be used with either volume of English From the Roots Up.

ERU Volume 1 and 2 on Quizlet

Teresa so kindly shared her hard work of inputting these into Quizlet.

Here is her note: I’d also like to share something with everyone that might help along the way. I set up flash cards online so that my kids could study, play games, and take practice tests. You could find them at http://www.quizlet.com Look up my user name, “whatagig.” I made sets for all the ERU Volume 1 Latin and Greek roots. You’ll see that there are 8 sets, 12 roots per set for the first seven and 16 roots for the eighth. It’s easy to understand once you take a look at it. (I just started Volume 2, so it’s incomplete so far. I’ll hopefully get it done soon.)

Quizlet is free. You could make an account of your own and then copy my sets onto your own profile. After you acquire the sets, you could place them in folders according to Cynthia’s test schedule. This makes studying for her tests even easier.

  1. Hi,
I just downloaded your ERU1 to my ‘new’ second-hand tablet, but when I tried to view it, said this kind of file unsupported on this device. Any help from some tech-savvy people, please!!!

    • Hi Sarah. I am glad you found my website and I hope once we get the ‘file unsupported’ issue out of the way, you will find the ERU files helpful in your homeschool.

The ERU1 file is in zip format. That might be the file type that is not supported. You will have to extract the files within the zipped file. The files within are pdf files. I don’t own a tablet, so I am not sure if it can unzip the files. If not, let me know and I can send them individually to you through email.

  2. Hi, I am new to Quizlet & tried to find your practice sets. Searched for ‘English from the roots up’ & under username ‘whatagig’ . Could you assist? Thank you! P.S. Found your site through Guest Hollow’s Language curriculum.

  3. Hello Cynthia, I recently bought a second-hand bag with some spelling rules and such in it to help my son, and as I was looking in the bag today, I found the ERU Volume 1 cards. I am not familiar with this and went looking for a teacher edition book to go with the cards (hah!). But instead, I found your website and this wonderful resource. I am not intending for my son to use it THIS year, because we need to continue basic spelling, but I will be bookmarking this website to use perhaps next year with him.

Do you think a struggling 7-year-old speller is too young for this? I’m thinking so. Maybe at 8 or 9. Your thoughts since you have already gone through it? I’m thinking if I did the games, he would love it, but I’m just not sure this is the right time to use this.

    Many thanks!

    • Hi Kelly. I think you are right, 7 would be too young for the full course. But, I do think he can learn the meanings of the root words. He will most likely be able to recognize the root word also. I would move slowly and make it fun with the games.

Rummy roots is a good one to start with, or a memory type game using the flash cards I created. You can also do a go-fish style game where you have to collect the root word and the meaning as a pair.

My kids were about 10 or 11 when we began. We went slow. They didn’t memorize all the derivatives, but were familiar with them. I was surprised at how easily they memorized the root meaning though. They did better than me!!

When he is 9 or 10, you can review the roots, but add in the derivatives. Who knows, by then he might be discovering them himself in his other subjects and while reading. 🙂

Let me know if you have any other questions.

  4. I cannot thank you enough for posting all of this and sharing with other moms. We just finished up ERU Vol 1 and you saved me SO much time and energy by having the tests and schedule all laid out. Thank you so much!

    • It is my pleasure Betsy! Thanks so much for the lovely comment. I know our time is precious and I am glad I am able to save y’all a bit of time so you can spend it in other areas of your daily lives.

  5. Thank you so much for this! We did Latin this year and I wanted something a bit more straightforward for next year to help with vocabulary building. I liked the flash cards but had no idea how to schedule or use them. Awesome resource!

  6. Oh my goodness, I feel like Sandra Jones comment above, I am overwhelmed with your kindness to share this resource for free. I was just trying to wrap my head around doing the girls tests on these words a different way and you have fun games and printable tests! You saved me a ton of time, it’s nicely done and I am so thankful for you and all the work you put in to making it!

    • Thanks so much Karin for your sweet comment. I am happy that they saved you time. I hope your girls enjoy the games and the tests. 🙂 Thanks again for stopping by and for taking the time to leave a comment. It is always great to ‘hear’ the appreciation in comments such as yours. 🙂

  7. Dearest Cynthia,
Every time I think about the ERU cards & tests you created I want to cry for joy (I’m not exaggerating). This is the kind of thing I love to do but homeschooling 7 children can be overwhelming (so that kind of stuff NEVER gets done). It was very thoughtful of you to create a set for study/play because I would not want to wear the cards I purchased. My children use the original cards to copy from as well. Thank you for making it available for free. I would also like to thank the others that contributed.
I often reflect on the bible story of the ten lepers. I am amazed that out of 10 that received victory and healing for their malady only one returned to express his thanks. I am sure there are countless others who are grateful for the service you have provided. It has been almost a year since I found your site and began using you materials. Of course what you have done does not compare to the is not life-changing healing of the lepers, but the principal still stands…a thank you is in order. I think of you often and wanted to be in the company of the one leper. THANK YOU!
    May God Richly Bless You!
    Sandra Jones

    • Sandra, thank you! That is one of the nicest comments I have received to date. Thanks so much for taking the time to come back and let me know. It is so wonderful to know that something I created years ago is still blessing others today. It is truly a pleasure. 😀

  8. Wow! What a treasure trove! Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful printables! I was trying to figure out a way to set up ERU for my daughter to study independently and you have saved me SO much time. Thank you for your generous gift!

  9. Thank you so much for offering these scheduling ideas and printables for ERU. You’ve just made this mama in China very happy! Feeling blessed by your efforts and generosity, even across the ocean….thanks so much!

  10. Thank you so much for sharing all this! I purchased EFRU over two years ago and it kept getting put aside. This year I pulled it out and it will be our vocab study for the year. You’re schedule and tests will keep me from having to reinvent the wheel so to speak! Thanks again.

  11. Hello,
I LOVE your website and am especially thankful for the ERU freebies! However, I downloaded the ERU Games & Flashcards Vol. 1 and took it to Staples to have printed today, but they would not do it because the of copywrite printed on each page. Would you kindly give me written permission to take to Staples in order to have them print it out on cardstock for me? (My measly home printer couldn’t handle that job).
    Many thanks!
    Lisa Antonic

  12. I could not save/print ERU VOL 2 Test Ans for 5 and 7. I kept getting an error of it could not be read. Could you email me a copy?

  13. LOVE! I stumbled upon your blog today while I was looking for resources for this curriculum. We have been using Vocabulary from Classical Roots series, but are so burnt out on worksheets. This is our last year for home school and are preparing to be a 9th grader next year. Thank you so much!

  14. I am using ERU for the first time – thank you for the resources to use with it. It helps get a plan together and will save a lot of time. Thank you for doing the work and sharing it.

What grade did you use this with?

  15. I just wanted to say thank you so much for these downloads & links! We’ve been using the ERU Vol. 1 this year & love it, but I struggle to find the time to make up tests & games & stuff to go along. I really appreciate your willingness to share what you’ve done. It’s a great help!

    • Elise, you’re right. Cynthia is wonderful for sharing all her work with us!

I’d also like to share something with everyone that might help along the way. I set up flash cards online so that my kids could study, play games, and take practice tests. (Cynthia, please feel free to share this with everyone if you like.)

  16. Hi Cynthia,
Can you tell me how many Greek roots there are in Volume 2? We are already using a Latin curriculum, so I pulled the Greek roots from Volume 1 and have only practiced those with our kids. It’s been great – and we’ve learned so much.

I was considering buying Volume 2 but wanted to know how many Greek roots there were to determine whether it would be worth it for us or whether I should look for something that just has mostly Greek roots.

    Thanks!
    Beth

  17. Hello Cynthia,

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your generosity in sharing these tests with all homeschoolers out there. My kids have been doing great with EFRU, Vol. 1, and you have made it so, so very easy for me to test them. I was wondering why you chose to make the last test of all 100 roots include the (newly learned) last 16 but did not make a test with only those 16 first. Did you ever make one for numbers 84 to 100 after this set of tests were made?

    Again, thanks a MILLION!!!

    Teresa

    • I decided to ask now because we are almost up to 85 very soon. (I meant 85 to 100 before.) Your format is so GREAT, but if you don’t have a test for these roots alone, I will probably make one myself.

      Take care,
      Teresa

    • Hi Teresa,
You know, I am not sure. lol! It just ended up that way, but I see your point. 🙂 I haven’t made one for 85-100. If you decide to make one and would like to share it, I’d love to add it. I’d of course credit it to you and can even add a link to your blog if you have one.

      • Hi Cynthia,

Wonderful! I made the new test for roots 85-100 and just mailed it to you. I’m very happy to share it with everyone, and I hope it helps! By the way, I just took a peak at Volume 2’s tests…same thing, lol. God willing, I will be working through the next volume with my kids next year. Thanks a million for those tests also. When I get toward the end of the Vol. 2’s roots (and if you or someone else hasn’t beat me to it), I’ll make another test for the last 16 from that set and gladly share it with you.

        Be well,
        Teresa

  18. Thank you so much! I have been looking for a way to use this more intensely. However, I am having trouble with downloading Test 1 and answers to test 1.

      • Thank you. It was Volume 1 Test and answers 1. There is also problems downloading Vol 2 Answers test 5 and 7. Not a big deal for me but just Not sure what is going on but all the rest downloaded perfectly. These are a great resource! Thanks again.
